What does an invitation actually mean?
That someone put your name on a list. It can mean they want you. It can mean they need three names for a process. It can mean the preferred firm asked for cover. It is not a score on strategy, capacity, or risk. Firms that treat every invitation as a win already made are the ones whose best people spend March on work they will regret in July.
The sector page is fit first, flattery last. This spoke is how to read the politics before the flattery becomes a draft.
How do you read the politics in a day?
Who else is in. Whether the specification describes a stack you do not have. Whether the timeline only works for someone already in the building. Whether the draft contract arrived with the RFP or will arrive after you have started. Whether a conversation is still allowed. Private processes vary. The four reads still hold: mandatories (even if they are not labelled), liability, roster, how you will be scored. See wired for the incumbent when the criteria are a memory test.
If you cannot name who would win if not you, you have not read it. “We were asked” is not a name.
What is different from a public RFT?
Terms are negotiable, until they are not. Scope will move after award, until you cap it. Probity is lighter, which means the relationship can be a fact, and it also means the ugly clause is easier to miss in a shorter PDF. Do not skip liability because the pack is 40 pages. Uncapped in a short letter is still uncapped. Indemnity does not care about the cover.
You can often decline with a call and a short letter. On an invited private RFP, the invitation was the relationship. Answering it with nothing is how invitations stop. How to say no-bid still holds. One true reason. No apology tour.
When is the invitation a no?
When an axis fails. When the preferred name is obvious and you would be cover. When the week would come off a client you actually want. When the only argument is that it would be awkward to decline. Awkward is a fake criterion. Write the no in week one, while the relationship can still use a clean sentence.
The sibling page is when the relationship is real and the project is not. This page is the invitation itself, scored as an inbound, not as a compliment.
