Guides / Sectors / Relationship vs project

Private

The client can be the point. The job still has to pass the other two axes.

Relationship value cannot override an unviable project scope or an uncapped risk profile. Strategic fit asks whether a client advances your multi-year business goals, but client goodwill never compensates for missing delivery capacity or loss-making margins. Takeaways

  • Name the relationship on the strategy axis. Do not give it its own row.
  • A bad project with a good client is still a bad project if risk fails.
  • Winning work you will resent is how relationships actually burn.
  • A clean no, early, is how the next invitation is the one that fits.

When is the relationship the strategy?

When the buyer is on the written list of clients you are building. When winning this makes the next three pursuits easier. When the operating relationship is the asset, not the logo. Write that sentence on the gate page. If you cannot write it, you do not have a strategy case. You have warmth.

Question 3 on the twelve questions is this. Question 4 still asks whether you are bidding to win or to stay visible. Visibility is not a relationship. It is a habit.

What can a relationship not rescue?

Uncapped liability the firm cannot carry. A roster that is not free. A mandatory you do not hold. A scope that will move after award with no cap. Private terms are negotiable until the letter of award, and sometimes not then. If legal has not read the clause, risk is unfinished. Unfinished is a review with a date, not a yes because you like them.

Delivery that you will resent is how the relationship actually dies. A project that starves the account you wanted to keep is a strategy fail wearing a friendly cover letter. Name the client that gets delayed. That name is part of the cost.

How do you score it without pretending?

Three scores, as usual. Strategy may pass on the relationship sentence. Capacity and risk still have to pass, or pass with a named condition. Do not average. A ninety on strategy with a twenty on risk is a no-bid. The bid/no-bid guide does not grow an exception for people you know.

If the MD overrides, write the override down. Hidden overrides become culture. Visible overrides are still decisions.

What does a good no look like here?

Thank them. Decline. One true reason at a height they can accept: capacity in this window, fit to the work you are concentrating on. Leave a door for the kind of work that does fit. Do not offer to help them rewrite the specification. Do not stay in the thread negotiating the decline. The letter is short on purpose.

The firms that decline well get asked back for the work that fits. The firms that submit thinly get asked back for the work nobody else wanted. The invitation was the relationship. The call is how you keep it.

Questions

Worth answering before you close the tab.

Can a relationship justify a bid that fails capacity or risk?

No. Name it on the strategy axis. Do not average. A fail on risk is a no-bid even if you like them.

When is a private client worth a thin project?

When the written strategy says so, and capacity and risk still pass or pass with a named condition. Thin plus uncapped is not a relationship strategy.

How do you decline without burning the client?

Early, in writing, one true reason, a door for work that fits. Silence on an invitation burns more than a clean no.
